DEERS

The DoD's master database that determines who is eligible for TRICARE — including TRICARE For Life.

Also known as: Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System

What is it?

DEERS (Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) is the Department of Defense's authoritative record of who's a sponsor and who's a dependent, along with each person's TRICARE eligibility. It's maintained by the Defense Manpower Data Center (DMDC) and accessed through milConnect.

Why does it matter?

If DEERS doesn't show you as Medicare-enrolled, TFL won't activate — even if you actually have Medicare. Wrong addresses, missing Part B dates, or out-of-date spouse records are the #1 cause of TFL claim denials.

When you'll encounter it

Update DEERS the moment you enroll in Medicare, when you marry/divorce, when an address changes, or whenever your status changes (e.g. military ID card renewal).

Impact on Medicare

DEERS does not affect Medicare directly. But Medicare data flows into DEERS via CMS — usually within 30–60 days of your Medicare effective date.

Impact on TRICARE For Life

DEERS is the gatekeeper for TFL. No DEERS update = no TFL coverage. Always verify your Medicare A and B dates show up in milConnect after enrolling.

Common misconceptions

  • "Medicare will automatically update DEERS for me."It usually does, but always verify yourself in milConnect. If the data doesn't show within 60 days, contact DMDC directly.
