TFL Overseas Coverage
Outside the U.S., TFL becomes the primary payer because Medicare generally doesn't pay overseas.
What is it?
Medicare does not pay for care received outside the United States (with rare exceptions). When TFL beneficiaries travel or live abroad, TFL becomes the primary and only payer for covered care.
Why does it matter?
TFL's overseas coverage is a major benefit Original Medicare doesn't offer. It's why many military retirees can comfortably travel or live abroad.
When you'll encounter it
Any care received outside U.S. territories.
Impact on Medicare
None — Medicare doesn't pay overseas.
Impact on TRICARE For Life
TFL pays first (instead of second). You'll usually pay upfront and file a claim with TRICARE Overseas Program.
Common misconceptions
- "My MA plan covers me worldwide." — Most MA plans only cover emergencies outside the U.S. TFL is far more robust overseas.
