Frequently Asked

What happens to my coverage if I travel or live abroad?

TFL becomes your primary payer overseas because Medicare generally doesn't pay outside the U.S. Keep Part B active and use the TRICARE Overseas Program.

TFL is one of the best overseas health benefits in retirement.

Medicare doesn't pay for care outside the U.S. (with very narrow exceptions). When you're abroad:

  • TFL pays first instead of second.
  • You'll usually pay the provider upfront and file a claim with the TRICARE Overseas Program.
  • Coverage includes most TRICARE-authorized services worldwide.

A few practicalities:

  • Keep Medicare Parts A and B active even while overseas — drop them and you lose TFL.
  • Many MA plans only cover emergency care abroad. If overseas travel is regular, Original Medicare + TFL is usually a better fit.
  • Snowbirding within the U.S.? TFL works in all 50 states with any Medicare provider — no network restrictions.
