Frequently Asked
Can I keep seeing military doctors?
Only on a space-available basis. At 65, retirees drop in MTF priority and most need to transition to civilian Medicare providers.
Short answer: probably not consistently.
Once you become Medicare-eligible, military treatment facilities (MTFs) serve you on a space-available basis only. That means active duty, their families, and TRICARE Prime enrollees are seen first. If a particular MTF has open capacity, you may continue to be seen — but you can't count on it for ongoing care.
Practical reality:
- Pharmacy at the MTF is still available to you (and remains the lowest-cost prescription channel).
- Primary care is rarely space-available at most installations.
- Specialty care may be intermittently available, but appointments aren't guaranteed.
What you should do:
- Call your current MTF and ask their policy for Medicare-eligible retirees.
- Begin building a civilian care network using Medicare Care Compare before your 65th birthday.
- Confirm any new doctor accepts Medicare assignment (they should also accept TFL secondary — most do automatically).
This is one of the biggest lifestyle adjustments at 65. Plan for it early.
