Frequently Asked

What if my spouse isn't Medicare-eligible yet?

Each spouse is handled independently. A younger spouse stays on TRICARE Prime/Select until their own Medicare eligibility.

Each TRICARE beneficiary's coverage is tied to their own age and Medicare status, not the sponsor's.

If you turn 65 first:

  • You enroll in Medicare and transition to TFL.
  • Your younger spouse stays on TRICARE Prime, Select, or Retired Reserve — whichever they were on before.
  • They continue paying any applicable Prime/Select fees.

When your spouse reaches their own Medicare eligibility (age 65, or earlier due to disability/ESRD):

  • They enroll in Medicare A and B.
  • They transition to their own TFL coverage automatically.

Keep DEERS up to date for both of you, and verify Medicare data in milConnect after each enrollment.
