Creditable Coverage
Other prescription coverage that's certified as good as or better than Medicare Part D — TRICARE Pharmacy qualifies.
What is it?
Creditable coverage is non-Medicare drug coverage that CMS has deemed actuarially equivalent to a standard Part D plan. Having it means you can delay Part D enrollment without facing a late-enrollment penalty.
Why does it matter?
TRICARE Pharmacy is creditable coverage. That's why TFL beneficiaries don't need Part D and don't face a penalty for skipping it.
When you'll encounter it
Once a year, TRICARE/Express Scripts mails a Creditable Coverage Notice for your records.
Impact on Medicare
Lets you skip Part D without penalty.
Impact on TRICARE For Life
TRICARE Pharmacy continues as your primary drug coverage.
Common misconceptions
- "I should keep the creditable coverage letter in case Medicare asks for it." — Yes — save it. If you ever do enroll in Part D, you may need to prove prior creditable coverage to avoid the penalty.
