Frequently Asked
What if I can't afford the Part B premium?
Look into a Medicare Advantage plan with a Part B giveback, the Medicare Savings Program if income is low, or Extra Help. Do NOT drop Part B.
Don't drop Part B. You'll lose TFL and face permanent late penalties when you re-enroll.
Several legitimate options can reduce the burden:
- Medicare Advantage Part B giveback — some veteran-focused plans return $100+/month to your Social Security check.
- Medicare Savings Programs (MSP) — state-administered programs that pay your Part B premium if income is below certain thresholds. Apply through your state Medicaid office.
- Extra Help (Low-Income Subsidy) — helps with Part D costs (less relevant if you have TFL but worth checking).
- IRMAA appeal — if you're paying the surcharge based on outdated income, file SSA-44.
A licensed specialist can help you identify which of these apply in your situation. Uncle Sam's Healthcare does this for veterans at no cost: (202) 552-1418.
